Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for all day-to-day maintenance aspects of both Conventional Transit and Specialized Transit service in accordance with contract operating standards that is safe and reliable. The Maintenance Manager plans and manages all skilled trade mechanical work including scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, inspections and cleaning to ensure safe, clean reliable vehicles, facilities and equipment.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of the Maintenance Manager position, but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. The Maintenance Manager must be able to perform the following tasks, among others:

  • Manages the daily maintenance functions of the fleet of fixed route and para-transit vehicles (revenue and non- revenue), facilities, vehicle related equipment (e.g. fare boxes) and shop equipment (tools, machinery, )
  • Ensures vehicles are clean, mechanically fit and are available to meet scheduled service requirements
  • Plans and manages all skilled trade mechanical work including scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, inspections and cleaning to ensure safe, clean reliable vehicles, facilities and equipment
  • Ensures all maintenance activity is performed in line with client, company and budgetary guidelines
  • Oversees all maintenance work to ensure compliance with regulatory codes, standards, company policies and contractual requirements (e.g. Ontario Highway Traffic Act, Employee Standards Act)
  • Conducts daily inspections of the facilities and fleet, including documentation of items related to safety, parking conditions, random inspection of buses for cleanliness and overall interior and exterior facility cleanliness
  • In conjunction with the General & Operations Managers, ensures all provincial, federal and company recordkeeping requirements are met
  • Maintains and updates all fleet vehicle titles, insurance and registration documents
  • Directs the work of all maintenance staff, including the development of work orders and the evaluation of all repairs performed by mechanics and external vendors
  • Ensures that all maintenance line items are managed within budget
  • Oversees and reviews inventory levels, initiating re-orders of parts as required
  • Manages the maintenance response to road calls to ensure cost effectiveness and efficiency
  • Diagnoses unusual vehicle maintenance issues with vehicles or equipment, pursuing cost recovery on warranty and performance issues and interfaces with vendors and manufacturers
  • Implements and monitors Preventative Maintenance Interval (PMI) schedules and system honoring standards of client’s contract and those of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)
  • Develops standard operating procedures geared to ensure consistency and that service meets contract requirements and corporate policy and are documented properly
  • Prepares required maintenance reports for client and management staff
  • Provides direct daily supervision of the maintenance team
  • Identifies, selects, trains, coaches and manages the performance of the maintenance team
  • Communicates clearly each staff member’s roles and responsibilities and provides support to help staff accomplish assigned objectives
  • Develops positive employee morale strategies
  • Develops maintenance staff schedules fairly, in consideration of collective agreements, according to client demands/requirements while adhering to budget, and any applicable legislated requirements or collective agreements terms
  • Prepares, verifies and reviews staff schedules and work records for payroll purposes
  • Ensures all safety regulations are being observed and all training methods are adequate and effective
  • Works with Safety & Training, Operations and General Manager to review accidents and incidents to determine cause and preventability and to identify trends that may require additional training resources
  • Participates in and advises senior management regarding labour relations strategies and relationships
  • Represents Company in grievance procedure
  • Respects and maintains the confidentiality of all employee records, business records, client and customer information, data and other information not otherwise available to the public or to employees-at-large.
  • Addresses human resource issues promptly, accordingly and following the principles of progressive discipline where appropriate, emphasizing corrective actions to improve individual performance
  • Determines whether to discipline and apply discipline, including suspensions and terminations, according to company policy
  • Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance a providing consistent example to operations staff and may be required to represent employer or client at industry related functions and meetings (e.g. Original Equipment Manufacturer) dealing with fleet and maintenance issues
  • Demonstrate due diligence in the maintaining a state of good repair for the client’s assets and in the best interests of the company
  • All other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

The Maintenance Manager works primarily in an office environment and may be called upon after hours from time-to- time by office employees or managers, in an emergency, or other reasons as required The job requires the following physical activities: sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, loading and unloading, typing, filing, answering phones  and considerable word at a computer keyboard and screen. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as required.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Ten (10) Years’ experience as a licensed commercial transport, heavy duty or automotive mechanic
  • Five (5) years of experience as a Maintenance Manager with experience in all facets of commercial transport operation. Management experience of a work group in a different industry may be substituted at the Company’s sole discretion
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience managing in a unionized environment.
  • Cost control or financial/budgeting experience
  • Possesses a valid Ontario 310T Truck and Coach Technician License
  • Qualifies for and maintains a valid Ontario Driver’s License Class C or better with a Z endorsement
  • May be required to qualify as a Joint Health and Safety Committee certified management member
  • Be able to pass and maintain a clear Criminal Background Check

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with an ability to influence people at all levels of the organization
  • Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while exceeding established goals and objectives
  • Extensive knowledge in diesel engine repair, automotive electrical and air conditioning repair
  • Extensive knowledge of provincial acts, regulations and by-laws affecting public transit, motor vehicles and industrial workplace
  • Knowledge of client and maintenance performance requirements
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to set clear expectations, coach, develop and motivate staff
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to hold the respect and confidence of all employees
  • Ability to work independently and objectively
  • Ability to effectively delegate tasks and provide appropriate supervision and follow up to department staff
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software
  • Budget and forecasting skills
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and present a professional demeanor and appearance
  • Demonstrated ability to manage with a “Safety First” attitude

Salary Range: $100,000 - $124,000, Commensurate with skills and experience.
