Job Description

The Safety & Training Supervisor is primarily responsible for delivering all MVT training programs to ensure best in class training is delivered in accordance with Company standards, client contractual requirements and expectations. The Safety & Training Supervisor is also responsible for supporting the implementation of safety programs and procedures in compliance with both provincial and federal regulations and corporate and client policies.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of the Safety & Training Supervisor position, but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. The Safety & Training Supervisor must be able to perform the following tasks, among others:

  • Provides classroom and in-service instruction according to corporate and client specifications in all aspects of vehicle operation in the course of passenger transportation
  • Provides monthly or annual ongoing/refresher training in topics relevant to the service and service area and in a timely manner
  • Assists the Safety & Training Manager in identifying and developing additional or refresher training needs based on current trends within the employee base
  • Ensures a fully-equipped complement of vehicle operators to provide service according to the contract guidelines
  • Documents all training activities and ensure accurate completion of all training related employee records
  • Establishes relationships with key client agency personnel to identify additional training needs, resources and opportunities
  • Conducts regular employee safety meetings
  • Provides feedback and follow up for operator performance reviews and identifies individual training needs where necessary
  • Ensures all MVT employees are current with general safety programs and practices
  • Reviews vehicular, passenger and employee incidents for determination of cause and preventability, identifying potential trends to be addressed in future training efforts as well as ensuring that retraining and appropriate corrective action is issued
  • Responds to and/or provides for trained staff response to operator incidents ensuring appropriate collection of information, documentation of events and reporting per company and client policies
  • Works with local provincial Worker's Compensation agencies to ensure all claims are handled promptly and effectively, including coordinating modified and gradual return to work programs for injured employees
  • Provides regular reports and updates to the Safety & Training Manager of training department and other required information
  • Assists the Safety & Training Manger to ensure that all safety manuals, programs, policies and procedures are current and meet the needs of the operating division
  • Assists with the development and communication of training policies, procedures and manuals as needed
  • Assists in the communication of positive safety communication messages through a variety of media (posters, safety blitz etc.)
  • Determines whether to discipline and apply discipline for safety related issues, including suspensions and terminations, according to company policy and in compliance with collective agreement
  • Represents Company in grievance procedure with safety/training related issues
  • Respects and maintain the confidentiality of all employee training records
  • Assists with the develop standard operating procedures to ensure consistency
  • Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance that is consistent with organizational standards
  • Respects and maintains the confidentiality of all employee records, business records, client and customer information, data and other information not otherwise available to the public
  • All other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

The Safety & Training Supervisor works both in an office environment and field environment with long periods of standing on-board buses and on the street in a variety of weather conditions. The Safety & Training Supervisor can be called upon after hours from time-to-time by managers, in an emergency, or other reasons as required. The job requires the following physical activities: Limited travel, sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, loading and unloading, typing, filing, answering phones.


  • Completion of a degree or college diploma with specialization in Adult Education, Occupational Health & Safety or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation in progress is preferred
  • Completion of the CUTA Ambassador and Skillform Programs, or equivalent program
  • Certified to deliver defensive driver training
  • Three (3) years of experience in a safety, training, occupational health & safety role, preferably in the transportation industry
  • Experience supervising in a unionized environment; supervisory experience of a unionized work group in a different industry may be considered at the Company's discretion
  • Must have a BZ driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Be able to pass a Criminal Background Check, provide and maintain a clear Vulnerable Sector Background Check

  • Intimate knowledge of project specific vehicles and equipment including client and service performance requirements
  • Knowledge of best in class safety and training programs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while exceeding established goals and objectives
  • Strong analytical and problem solving capabilities demonstrating meticulous attention to detail
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to set clear expectations, coach, develop and motivate staff
  • Familiarization with the service area
  • Ability to hold the respect and confidence of all employees
  • Highly proactive and able to work independently and objectively
  • Proven ability to take initiative and demonstrate a desire to learn business subjects
  • Excellent customer service, teamwork and communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software
  • Demonstrated ability to manage with a "Safety First" attitude
